Welcome to Ensign Multi-Purpose Cooperative Limited

Registered in England as a registered society under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014. Reg No. 5242. Ensign is a proud member of Cooperatives UK (uk.coop) and by extension, the International Cooperatives Alliance (ica.coop) with active registrations in many countries around the world. We are a global cooperative movement.

Our major area of focus involves empowering African women, providing them with employment opportunities, business capital and support, as well as interest-free microloans. By fostering a culture of saving and financial responsibility, the cooperative enables its members to achieve long-term economic stability. Through this comprehensive approach, Ensign is committed to building resilient communities and improving the quality of life for its members in Africa.

Stronger Together: Ensign Cooperative for a Better Tomorrow

Empowering Lives Through Cooperative Connections

The cooperative model is essential to eradicating poverty in all areas of the world because it emphasizes self-reliance, shared ownership, and community-driven economic growth, unlike the temporary relief provided by charity and handouts. While philanthropic efforts from organizations have made significant impacts, they often fail to address the root causes of poverty. Charity and Philanthropic handouts, though well-intentioned, create a cycle of dependency and do not equip individuals with the skills, resources, or long-term opportunities needed to escape poverty. The cooperative model, on the other hand, empowers individuals by pooling their resources, providing access to capital, training, and shared infrastructure, allowing them to build sustainable livelihoods and create inclusive wealth within their communities.

Empowerment through Cooperation: Moving Beyond Handouts

Sustainability and Self-Reliance:

Cooperatives empower individuals and communities by providing them with the tools, skills, and resources to create their own wealth and sustain themselves over the long term. Unlike charity handouts, which offer temporary relief, cooperatives encourage self-reliance and foster a sense of ownership in economic development.

Shared Ownership and Collective Effort:

In cooperatives, members pool resources and share in the profits, which promotes mutual accountability and ensures that the benefits are distributed among all participants. This model reduces inequality and strengthens community ties, whereas charity often leads to dependency without addressing the underlying causes of poverty.

Economic Empowerment and Local Development:

Cooperatives stimulate local economies by generating employment, encouraging entrepreneurship, and promoting local industries. Charity, though helpful in emergency situations, does not create lasting economic opportunities, while cooperatives focus on long-term growth and community-driven development.

Ensign Cooperative Principles

Guidance Notes on the Cooperative Principles

In 2016, the ICA’s Principles Committee released the Guidance Notes on the Cooperative Principles, giving detailed guidance and advice on the practical application of the Principles to cooperative enterprise.

These Guidance Notes give detailed guidance and advice on the practical application of the Principles to cooperative enterprise. They aim to help cooperators run their cooperatives more efficiently and effectively. We also hope that they will be a worldwide resource for educators, learners, regulators, decision-makers, public authorities, and for others seeking to understand how the Principles are to be applied in practice.

These Guidance Notes are a statement of our understanding of the Principles now, but they are living documents, not static. These Guidance Notes aim to state our understanding of the application of the Principles in contemporary terms for the 21st century. Read More
